Our Favorite Curriculums: Institute of Excellence in Writing

If you have been following along, this is our fourth blog post covering our favorite curriculums we use in our homeschooling journey. The previous blog posts cover All About Learning Press, Math U See, and Sonlight HERE.

This curriculum was a no-brainer when I found it. I would have taught writing very similar to IEW's approach to writing had I remained in the classroom teaching. Writing is a simple process, but I know it can be overwhelming to some. IEW takes away that overwhelm with clear and simple steps that build off each other and can help the most reluctant writer.

The best decision I have made with writing and grammar is waiting to build a solid foundation with reading first (find out why we delay the use of writing and grammar HERE in this blog post). Mouse is currently using Structure and Style for Students 1B, and I am about to start a theme-based writing unit with Thumper. Both girls are using IEW's FIX IT grammar. We will continue to use IEW for the following top five reasons.

One: Ease of Use

For the most part, all of the components we have used from IEW have been in an open-and-go type format. The Fix-It Grammar, Structure and Style are easy to follow and allow you to create your own pace or follow the suggested schedules. There are clear expectations and instructions for each component.

Two: Laid out Process of Writing

As I mentioned above, IEW teaches writing in a way that I would have taught it had I remained a teacher in the public school system. I like the systematic approach and how each concept builds off the next, allowing a student's writing to develop over time instead of the initial high expectations.

Three: Video Instruction

While I have the background to teach writing, I like that there are videos for our girls to follow for the Structure and Style curriculum, allowing someone besides Mom to provide instruction. It gives a chance for the girls to hear examples of how peers their age are writing and see some of the struggles of other students, helping them enhance their writing.

Four: Choice and Variety

I also like that there are various choices regarding what to choose for the writing component each year. We can either do the Structure and Style for Students or choose from one of the many themed books at each level. The variety allows students and parents to have autonomy over their choices for what they do for school. Within these choices, students can develop their skills according to their level. You can challenge or assist a student as much as they need and still follow along with the lesson plans.

Five: Community and Company

IEW wants parents to feel confident in their ability to teach writing. They offer a course for parents, Teaching Writing: Structure and Style. It allows parents to immerse themselves in how to teach Structure and Style to their kids by offering this seminar-style course for parents. There are also weekly/monthly podcast episodes and other audio content to help address writing problems and how parents can help their students. In addition to the teaching of parents, there is a wonderful online community of support and guidance.
