A Closer Look at Beyond Literature

I introduced the concept of Beyond Literature earlier this month in a blog post titled Beyond Literature: A New Adventure for Our Homeschool.  But basically, it is a literature program. I’m creating for my girls, and I am also sharing it here as well.  As of right now there are three main components: Elements of Literature, Book Lists, and Book Reports and Summaries.  Today I would like to take a closer look at these three components and shed some light on what to look forward to.

Elements of Literature

I’ve created roughly ten different units to discuss the building blocks of literature. Each unit will have a power point notes presentation along with student note pages. With introducing the concept I will also include two to three activities to reenforce the concept to help put it into practical use.  Also, to help visualize the element discussed I will be using mentor text with picture books as well.

So far, the units are as follows: Types of Literature, Elements of Literature Introduction, Setting, Characters, Characterization, Dialogue, Point of View, Fractured Fairytales, Conflict and Plot.  I am hoping to release each unit as we complete them in our Supplemental Saturday activities.  Once all units are released, I will have a few bundling options available as well.

Book Lists

I have begun to curate grade level lists of book choices for my girls to choose from to read each year.  These are by no means all extensive lists of every book out there for each grade level.  These are books I have chosen for my girls based on their interests and what might challenge them a little.  Each list pack will have a visual and written check list along with book descriptions/summaries of each of the books.

Book Reports and Summary Pages

I have created several non-traditional book reports and divided them into two-grade level options (2nd grade-4th grade and 5th grade to 8th grade).  Some projects overlap both grade levels, but will have different requirements based on the level.  I have also created several one page book summary pages as well.  These will be released as I finish up rubrics and sizing, and I plan to provide bundle options for these as well.

I have been so giddy creating all these, and happy to let my nerdy side out and get back to lesson planning and creating for my girls.  I’m excited to be able to share them with others too.
