The Architecture of Terror: Edgar Allan Poe Pre-Reading Unit

The Architecture of Terror is a 5-day pre-reading unit designed to give students the background and literary vocabulary they need before beginning an Edgar Allan Poe unit.

Students are introduced to Gothic literature, Dark Romanticism, unreliable narration, psychological horror, tone, mood, symbolism, and Poe’s biography. The unit also examines how events in Poe’s life influenced recurring themes and ideas in his writing.

The lessons are designed to be used before reading Poe’s stories or poetry and can be taught as a standalone introduction or as the opening of a larger Poe literature unit.
