2021 2nd Quarter Wrap-Up: Thumper 1st Grade

2021 2nd Quarter Wrap-Up: Thumper 1st Grade

In history with Thumper, we worked our way through American Revolution and into the forming of the United States this quarter. I have personally enjoyed the mini-biographies in our Hero’s and Happenings text with Sonlight K-HBL. In addition to the history texts, the read alouds have also been impressive this quarter. We have read Roxie and the Hooligans and Just Dance. I also added in Magic Tree House: Revolutionary War on Wednesday and Mysteries, according to Humphrey. These additional books have replaced titles we already read aloud last year before Sonlight revamped some of their levels.

If you read the previous post (Second Quarter 2021 Together Wrap-Up), then you know we have been on the move traveling in the never-ending month of June. Mouse is marching right along through American history year 2. Even though I had to double up a few days on history reading, and we are a day or two shy of meeting our goals this quarter for read alouds, we are still on track. This quarter we have studied America and the Land of Promise with its innovations and advancements right on through World War 1 and ended the quarter as America is coming out of the Great Depression with FDR. In our read alouds together, we have read The Great Wheel, Old Yeller, Little Britches and we are midway through Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry.

It is finally JULY!!! Holy man, I thought June was never going to end. It was the last month of our second quarter, and Woah, it seemed to go on forever. In the first part of quarter2, we were in North Carolina. We weren’t able to get out and do much with restrictions in place, so we made the most of it. We took walks every day as long as it wasn’t raining and played lots of games together. We were able to spend Easter with some of my family in North Carolina. But, if you have followed us at all on INSTAGRAM, then you know we have been on the move a lot. We left North Carolina, has Hubby got a job contract closer to home. So, in less than 48-hours, we had the apartment packed and loaded, and then we headed home.

History has been fun so far this year with Thumper. We first learned about maps and globes and then we were quickly on our way to discovering American History. She has learned about the first American, explorers, pilgrims and we finished the quarter learning about colonial times. For Read Alouds this year I am altering the schedule in Sonlight, because a few of the ones assigned in HBL K are duplicates from when we did HBL A last year. So, I have done some shifting and I have also added in Magic Treehouse books to fill in any gaps and we have read Thanksgiving on Thursday this quarter. So far this year, in our read alouds from sonlight, we have read Anna Hibiscus, Love From Anna Hibiscus, The World According to Humphrey and Lulu and the Dog from the Sea.

We have begun the second part of our study of American history. We began by our study with a look at William Wilberforce, who helped pave the way for the abolishment of slavery in England. Then we turned to America and the abolishment of slavery and the build up to the Civil War. We moved on to post war reconstruction and the Barron’s and rise of inventions and innovations. I read aloud to her Caddie Woodlawn, Across Five Aprils, and The Great Turkey Walk.

We started our school year in Wisconsin this year, as we welcomed Bird into our family and waited to get her first shots before we joined Daddy-O on the road this year. We are wrapping up our first quarter now though in North Carolina area again. We took a stop in Indiana for a little over a week mid-March and celebrated Thumper’s birthday with our friends and their son who shares a birthday with her.
